Bridging Markets

Cultural Activities

As part of CSD Summit İstanbul 2026, we are pleased to present a curated Cultural Program highlighting the refined tradition of Ebru — the art of marbling — as a reflection of Türkiye’s heritage of craftsmanship, harmony and structured creativity.

Inspired by our Summit theme, “Bridging Markets & Continents – Empowering Growth”, the art of Ebru serves as a living metaphor of integration. Just as capital markets connect diverse participants across borders within a governed framework, Ebru brings independent colors together into a balanced and unified composition — without losing their individuality.

Through this program, we invite our guests to experience not only a refined artistic tradition, but also a cultural philosophy rooted in discipline, patience and aesthetic balance.

Art of Ebru

About the Art of Ebru

Ebru, known internationally as the art of marbling, is one of the oldest traditions of paper decoration in Turkish culture.

The word “ebru” derives from a Central Asian term meaning “marbled” or “cloud-like.” The art traveled along historical trade routes and evolved across civilizations before flourishing in Anatolia. In Europe, it became known as “marbling” and was often referred to as “Turkish paper.”

Traditionally used in bookbinding and calligraphy, Ebru developed into a sophisticated artistic discipline characterized by:

  • Precision within fluid movement
  • Structured technique within organic form
  • Harmony created from diversity

Each composition is formed on water, where pigments are carefully guided using delicate tools. Although governed by established techniques, no two works are ever identical — reflecting both discipline and spontaneity.

Today, Ebru is recognized not only as a traditional craft, but as a contemporary artistic expression representing balance, continuity and refined craftsmanship.

Hikmet BARUTÇUGİL

The Cultural Program will feature Hikmet Barutçugil, internationally recognized master of Ebru and designated “Living Human Treasure” by UNESCO in 2020.

Over decades of artistic research and practice, he has established a distinctive contemporary interpretation of Ebru while preserving its classical foundations. His works have been exhibited internationally and are included in prominent collections.

At the Summit, he will lead:

  • A curated Ebru Workshop on the first day
  • A special Ebru Exhibition inspired by Istanbul’s silhouettes during the following days

Participants will experience live demonstrations of this centuries-old art form and observe the subtle balance between control and fluidity that defines Ebru.
